Western
Cape
Cape Town and Cape Peninsula with beautiful Cape Dutch Architecture,
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Winelands (Stellenbosch, Paarl,
Franschhoek), Garden Route, whales at Hermanus, penguins at Boulders,
great white shark at Gaansbaai, seals, ostrich farms and Cango Caves
in Oudtshoorn, Knysna Lagoon, Plettenberg Bay, George. Popular activities
are floral tours, sailing, fishing, whale watching, shark diving, wine
tasting, or just enjoying Cape Town and the Garden Route.

Eastern Cape
Port Elizabeth and the beaches, surfing at Jeffreys Bay, Addo Elephant
Park, and Shamwari Private Game Reserve.

KwaZulu-Natal
Durban and the golden mile (the beaches), Drakensberg Mountains, game
viewing in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, Mkuze, Ndumu National Parks, St. Lucia
Wetlands (world heritage site), Sodwana Bay (southernmost coral reef
in Africa) and Aliwal Shoal for diving, surfing at Richards Bay, Umgeni
River Bird Park. Diving, surfing, fishing, sailing. Trekking and hiking
in the Drakensberg Mountains, where viewing ancient rock art and beautiful
views are the major activities.
Mpumalanga
As the home of world famous Kruger National Park and several private
game reserves like Sabi Sands, Londolozi, Timbavati bordering it; Mpumalanga
offers some of the best game viewing and the most luxurious game lodges
in the world. This region is where you are most likely to see the big
five: lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard and up to 147 mammal and
507 bird species. Other attractions are Blyde River Canyon (one of the
deepest canyons in the world), Pilgrims Rest and historic towns along
the Voortrekkers route.
Limpopo (Northern Province)
Like Mpumalanga, the major attraction is wildlife. Northern Kruger
National Park goes up to the border with Zimbabwe and there are private
reserves including the Waterberg area with some of the oldest geological
formations.
Gauteng
Johannesburg is the city of gold and Soweto, home of Nelson Mandela
and Desmond Tutu (two Nobel Peace Price winners), is the largest township
in the southern hemisphere. Pretoria, the administrative capital is
home to the Union Buildings, an architectural masterpiece, and to one
of the top zoos in the world. Near Krugersdorp is the cradle of humankind
with some of the first caves occupied by humans in the world. The largest
diamond was found at Cullinan and visiting gold, platinum and diamond
mines is an attraction.
Northwest Province
Sun City is the resort, entertainment and casino complex famous for
the Palace of the Lost City Hotel and the golf courses. Pilanesberg
National Park is next to it and is home to the big five. Madikwe, one
of the largest game reserves in South Africa, and Hartebeespoort Dam
for water sports are other attractions.

Northern Cape
Kgalagadi Transfrontier (Kalahari Gemsbok) Park is the second largest
in South Africa after Kruger National Park. The Kalahari desert starts
here and makes game viewing very interesting along the dry riverbeds.
Winelands are near the Orange River, the longest in South Africa. One
can raft on the Orange River very close to the Augrabies Falls, which
is a national park offering great hiking. Kimberley is the diamond city
with one of the largest manmade holes in the world. Namaqualand in spring
offers the best floral show with thousands of species of the Cape Floral
Kingdom.
Free State
Bloemfontein, today the judicial capital, was the capital of the early
Boer Republic of the Orange Free State. Golden Gate Highlands National
Park offers superb bird watching. The Maluti Mountains offer good hiking
and Rustler’s Valley has beautiful scenery.
